As a contortion coach, I will use contortion-based techniques to train not just passive flexibility but active flexibility at end ranges. Children naturally have bodies with less resistance and baggage than adult bodies. They build flexibility easily and quickly. The earlier a child starts contortion, the easier it is for them to build the skills, flexibility and stability to become a professional contortionist if they choose to. My focus, as such, is to train stability and strength so students are able to hold their end ranges actively and with control, lessening the likelihood of injury and ensuing a long career in their chosen disciplines. The skills and strength learned in contortion are also applicable to other disciplines such as tumbling, cheer, ballet, gymnastics or aerial arts. Having good control over back and leg flexibility will not only help students create beautiful lines, but also control their movement in different disciplines.
